The Best Places to Elope in Winchester and Frederick County, VA
Being in the wedding photography business since 2009, I have been to and photographed many couples all around Winchester, VA and the Frederick County area. Oftentimes, couples will seek my advice on a nice scenic location to be married and have their pictures taken. Here are a few of my favorites:
Old Town Winchester
Right down the road from the city / county courthouse where you can get your marriage license is the beautiful “Old Town Winchester.” As their official website describes it, Old Town is full of “charming shops, delicious restaurants, centuries-old architecture, numerous historical landmarks, and museums waiting to be explored.”. I have done dozens of photo sessions on the streets of Old Town, and each time I find a new unique spot to take some memorable photographs of my couples. You can get married right on the streets of Old Town if you like!
Jim Barnett Park
Jim Barnett Park is Winchester’s main park and only a couple minute’s drive from the Old Town area. Featuring a beautiful lake, short nature trails and a large playground area, it has plenty of options for holding a short elopement ceremony. Get married under a weeping willow tree, right by the lake while feeding the geese or heck…on a swing set on the playground!
Third Winchester Battlefield
This historic Civil War battlefield features a 5 mile walking and biking trail which leads through some beautiful natural settings. There are vast fields, wooded areas and even a stream / pond which can provide a very private setting for your elopement. Be sure you bring your walking shoes!
John Handley High School Area
This historic high school is a focal centerpiece to Winchester. With its athletic field and track open to the public during off hours, the iconic steps of the high school can provide a really neat background for your elopement and photographs afterwards. It would be an added bonus if you both happened to graduate from Handley!
Honorable Mention – Lake Holiday (residency required)
While Lake Holiday is only accessible if you live or know of a resident there, I will admit the lake can make for a wonderful elopement setting. I have been there a few times and have enjoyed the setting for a few of my photo sessions. So if you happen to know someone that lives there and want to get married by the lake, it might be something worth considering!
